FRESH, FUN, CLASSIC SURF ROCK
“Ahhhhh...surf guitar!
That often dreamy-sounding,
spring reverb-laden, retro guitar-driven
sub-genre. Surf guitar is an instrumental style of music that hails from the early 60’s surf culture of southern California,
and was popularized by the likes of Dick Dale,
The Chantays and The Ventures. Even though this vintage style of rock can sound frozen in time, it’s very much alive today and moving forward with a whole new generation
of players giving it their own sound.
The Mermen, Los Straightjackets, Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and of course
our local champions, The Real Gone.
The Real Gone cooks up surf guitar and cooks it up well. This powerhouse trio has been playing the Chicago area since 2007. They have played some of the more musically-heavy area venues such as Martyrs’, Fitzgerald’s,
House of Blues, City Winery and countless other events and festivals, including
Tinley Park’s own 2017 Block Party.
Their line-up features Bret Figura on drums, Phil Lazzari on guitar and Joe Rauen on electric and upright bass.
I must confess a penchant for instrumental music and trios, so for me to give these guys a nod was a no-brainer. Their playing is energetic, tight and fun. So if you find yourself being somewhat skittish about checking out a largely-instrumental band, be not afraid!
Surf guitar is deeply woven through our American musical fabric and is very likable. Despite being a trio, their sound is
very complete, totally entertaining
and it really packs a wallop.
Think of this band as a well-constructed, three-legged stool.
Always rock-steady
and it will NEVER wobble!”
